Why do we not  a hear fuss about this. Are the Liberals afraid to offend the business interests . The economy (oh holy economy- the only god worth mentioning anymore) over human rights . And nothing subtle about it. As the Conservatives like it, it's as clear as black or white. And as blatant. The whole E.U. and O.A.S. don't recognize the Honduras regime. But, hello! U.S. and little Canada. We think it's just ducky. Embarrassment upon embarrassment. The evil of which they speak!

Peter Kent recently returned from a three day trip (February 17-20) to Honduras, proudly declaring the mission a success. As Canada's Minister of State for the Americas, Kent is the Tory government's point person for Canada's growing political and economic interests  in the region. Honduras has become an important focus of those interests, since the military coup last June against the moderately left-leaning president, Manuel Zelaya, swung the country sharply back to the right.

Ousted Honduran president Manuel Zelaya has slammed the US for supporting Sunday's presidential elections, saying that the US is supporting a coup-perpetrating regime.

"The United States is not just supporting the elections but it is supporting the de facto regime, it is supporting the dictatorship, it is supporting the coup-perpetrating regime," Zelaya said in a telephone interview published on Thursday by the Brazilian website UOL.

Zelaya was ousted by a military coup on June 28 and has been sheltered in the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa for over two months, since his clandestine return to the Central American country.

Zelaya says that the election is "null and void" and insisted that "We are going to formally question that election."

Now that Manuel Zelaya has returned to Honduras, the coup government – after first denying that he was there – has unleashed a wave of repression to prevent people from gathering support for their elected president.

This is how US secretary of state Hillary Clinton described the first phase of this new repression Monday night in a press conference: "I think that the government imposed a curfew, we just learned, to try to get people off the streets so that there couldn't be unforeseen developments."

Millions of dollars in USAID funding still flowing to Honduras | | the narcosphere

The taxpayer-funded Millennium Challenge Corporation has continued to move millions of dollars into Honduras since the June 28 coup d'état, but it is not alone, Narco News has now confirmed.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is slated to provide Honduras with nearly $47 million in funding in fiscal 2009, which ends Sept. 30, 2009. Nearly all of that money (some $43 million) is scheduled to be delivered as previously planned to Honduras — which is now under the leadership of a putsch regime that President Obama has already described as “not legal.”

Honduras: Military Coup Engineered By Two US Companies?

In writing my new book Hoodwinked (Random House, Nov 2009 publication date), I recently visited Central America. Everyone I talked with there was convinced that the military coup that had overthrown the democratically-elected president of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya, had been engineered by two US companies, with CIA support. And that the US and its new president were not standing up for democracy.

Earlier in the year Chiquita Brands International Inc. (formerly United Fruit) and Dole Food Co had severely criticized Zelaya for advocating an increase of 60% in Honduras's minimum wage, claiming that the policy would cut into corporate profits. They were joined by a coalition of textile manufacturers and exporters, companies that rely on cheap labor to work in their sweatshops.

Canadian Media's Coverage of the Coup in Honduras Has Been Atrocious

This resistance - taking place under the threat of military repression - has gone almost entirely unreported by leading Canadian media. So has Canada's tacit support for the coup.

Uninterested in the Conservative government's machinations, the Canadian media is even less concerned with the corporations that may be influencing Ottawa's policy towards Honduras.
